Mullangi Sambar / Radish Sambar

Mullangi Sambar is one of a flavourful sambar.Radish leave their aroma and taste in this sambar.



Needed:
1 cup toor dal
2 cups peeled & sliced white radish/mooli/mullangi
1 cup of Tamarind water (gooseberry size tamarind) mixed with 2 tsp sambar powder,pinch of turmeric, pinch of hing,salt.
5-6 shallots(sambar vengayam),pealed
1 medium size tomatoes, chopped
Curry leaves,1/2 spoon mustard seeds,1/4 spoon of methi seeds,1 spoon cumin seeds, pinch hing powder,1/2 spoon urad dall,1 green chilli
salt as required
Method:
STEP1: Pressure cook the dal with a pinch of turmeric and ¼ spoon of cumin seeds in 2 cups water. Once the pressure of the cooker drops down on its own, open the lid.The dal would be cooked. if the dal is not cooked, then pressure cook again adding some water if required.lightly mash the cooked dal with a wooden spoon and keep it aside.

STEP2: Heat oil in a pan , add mustard seeds , let them splutter ,then add methi seeds,cumin seeds ,urad dal ,curryleaves,hing and 1green chilli. Fry till the urad dal turns a light brown.
STEP3:Then add shallots. Fry till the shallots become transparent and then add the tomatoes Add the radish. stir and fry for 3 to 4 minutes.then pour 1cup of water and cover with lid and cook till radish gets cooked.

STEP4: After those radish got cooked , Add those mixed tamarind water . let it cook for about 5 mins . Now add ,pressure cooked and mashed dal to it. Mix well,let it cook for 10 mins in slimmer flame.

Switch off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves .
